  • STRANGE TALES: Brand New Beginnings

Strange Tales launches June 15th, we launch with 3 initial films and we continue to produce more! Over the coming week between now and the launch we will highlight those films produced, in production and in pre-production - basically what you can look forward to viewing from local south wales talent - both behind and in front of the camera. The channel is a showcase and we are proud to present it and continue to produce the short films for it. One of the films to be released on Launch day / June 15th........ BRAND NEW BEGINNINGS Written by Matthew Ford In an alternate, present day Wales, people have become dependent on social media. Online dating is commonplace, and half of all UK marriages end in divorce. Seth and Tristan a couple in their twenties, have signed up for treatment at Brand New Beginnings, a company with a procedure that wipes all the bad memories from your relationship, replacing them with false, happy memories developed in a laboratory. As the procedure is explained, the couple begin to have second thoughts. The film is Directed by Matthew Fisher, Matthew is a new to the world of directing. Only having directed two full length plays, “Abandoned” and “The Universe plc” – both performed sold out runs – he excited to be part of this brilliant project. Outside directing Matthew has guest starred in the award nominated web-series "Whovians", be seen in "Packaged," one of the It’s My Shout short films that was aired on BBC and even has been nominated for best supporting actor by the Glamorgan Drama League. Matthew also likes to write scripts in his spare time where he has found some success, with his writing being performed all over the UK, online and even across the pond in New York City. The film stars Christopher Maxwell, Harold T Spencer and Sarah Bennington. Christopher Maxwell graduated from the Academy of Live & Recorded Arts (ALRA North) in 2016, and since acted in productions in Cardiff and in the North West. Christopher has also helped make short films throughout his young career and has since taken up the pen and paper and begun writing short stories. Harold T Spencer acting journey began in theatre: playing such roles as Le Chevalier Danceny in Dangerous Liasons, Dr David Kelly in the devised play Harrowdown Hill (centered around the Iraq war) and Feste in Twelfth Night. Aside from acting in some student films, Harold's first real foray into the wonderful world of film acting came with his role as Edgar on Whovians Season One with this very company. Having had such a blast, he looks forward to seeing what comes next with this production. When not acting and working as a supporting artist, Harold can be found developing indie video games and is currently on a TV production apprenticeship. Sarah Bennington is an actor and musician. Since making her acting debut in 2016 with Axon Theatre in “Being Norwegian” – performing at both the Cardiff and Edinburgh Fringe Theatre Festivals – she has had numerous lead and supporting roles in other theatre productions. These have included “Abandoned” with Dramatic Moose & Watchers Productions, “The Great Gatsby” with Everyman Theatre, and most notably “The Last Nickel” with Monocle Theatre Company – for which she received an award for Best Individual Performance in the GDL One Act Play Festival 2018. She has been in a number of short films, including “The Wolf & I” which was officially selected for three International Film Festivals. She also has a couple of feature films and a web series coming up, to be filmed later this year. As a musician, Sarah studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and currently holds the Sub-Principal Flute position in the Welsh National Opera Orchestra. Her life is pretty busy but she is loving every minute of it! The film and the channel launches June 15th!!!!

Please watch (for now) the final Sketchy AF over the coming weekend and please watch the rest - available here! Plans are in place for new material and please stand by for that - One Series of sketches that are in pre production are more from Ross Kemp?!?!?!

  • Update: March/April 2019

We are in a very happy mood at Watchers Productions! Why, you ask? Because a lot is going on and a lot is going in the right direction! Sketchy AF Sketchy AF has been releasing a new short comedy every two weeks since January, this run will come to an end in May. But do not be upset, we have three new episodes still to come: the final two parts of Agony Aunt Hazel, and a fantastic final Jingle sketch which guest stars Victoria George-Veale. So far, the response has been great from those who have watched them and we have a few ideas in the pipeline for new shorts to film soon. Strange Tales We have split the first phase of films in two - originally we wanted to produce and then release eight Tales on launch. However, we have decided to take some of the pressure of ourselves on the post production side, by launching the series on time but with half the films to start with. So now there are two phases of short films in different stages of production. The first four films that will be released on the launch of Strange Tales are: Human Resources, Brand New Beginnings, Second Chances and Locked. Human Resources (which we filmed back in August 2018, and is written and directed by Richard Williams) is about Sam- a young but high-flying business executive, popular with her co-workers and with the world at her feet. During a meeting with the mysterious Noah from Human Resources, everything she thought she knew about the world around her is thrown into doubt. The film is locked in the edit room, and is into the final stages, receiving sound dub and colour grading. We would also like to welcome to the project, Tom Gatley - a filmmaker in his own right who has composed the music for this Tale. To find out more about Tom please go here. Brand New Beginnings was filmed over a few weekends between October 2018 and January 2019 and is written by Matthew Ford. In an alternate, present day Wales, people have become dependent on social media. Online dating is commonplace, and half of all UK marriages end in divorce. Seth and Tristan, a couple in their twenties, have signed up for treatment at Brand New Beginnings, a company with a procedure that wipes all the bad memories from your relationship, replacing them with false, happy memories developed in a laboratory. As the procedure is explained, the couple begin to have second thoughts. Directed by Matthew Fisher and currently being edited by Luke Stanbury, Whovians composer Andrew Gallego is waiting in the wings to start composing the score for this Tale. Second Chances was filmed at the start of February 2019 and is written by Matthew Fisher and directed by Teddy Smith. John doesn't like to stand out. "Out of sight, out of mind" is his philosophy. But his way of thinking is challenged when he's forced to reevaluate his life. This Tale is currently being edited by Emily Lawrence. The fourth tale, Locked (written by Eleonora Mignoli, who also wrote Rory Romantic), in pre-production and will be produced and directed by Luke Walters who is currently shooting his debut feature, Generation Y. We wish him and all cast and crew involved the very best of luck for the next few weeks on set with this. Luke will then jump straight onto filming Locked for us. In the future, justice is delegated to machines: infallible and objective, these AI dispense fair punishments. Frank is accused by his neighbour of dropping trash on their lawn. It's a civil infraction and, while it was only an oversight on Frank's part, he's charged with a small fine. Frank is about to leave when his hand is locked, and the machine accuses him of murder – of somebody Frank has never met. Frank calls for help, but the procedure is clear: once a trial starts, it cannot be interrupted. Frank's only chance at survival is to prove his innocence, but while the AI begins drawing a net of guilt around him, we're left asking ourselves if he’s as innocent as he looks. The other four films left from the initial eight will be going into pre-production soon and will be filmed over the coming months ahead. Watchers Productions has invested in a new piece of kit to help further our quality and bring stronger filmic images to our work - this has held up progress on these four films! So they are now called Phase Two; more info here. That bit of kit is an investment in a new camera, which is the Black Magic Design Cinema Camera 4K. We waited patiently on this for over six months. Now it has arrived, we will swing into action on the next four films. Please look forward to the first four being released this spring/summer and enjoy the final shorts from Sketchy AF. Thank you for reading and supporting. More news when we have it, Rhys, Matt and Terrance.

  • Production Update: February 2019

We have hit 2019 hard and fast - been a busy month! We have wrapped two Strange Tales witin the first month of the year!!! Not bad! Well...... kind of! First off, back in November 2018 we were shooting on the second production day of Matthew Fisher's Directed Brand New Beginnings - unfortunately time got away from us and the sun set at 4pm. Flash forward to a cold Sunday 20th January and the main cast and crew gathered to get the final two scenes shot. The day began filming the opening and other scenes down and around Cardiff Bay - with a little fun and laughter keeping us warm we got what we needed. We moved onto the afternoon at the location that is doubling for the couples home - once there, a few rehearsals, lighting rigging and as it takes place at night - some blacking out the bottom floor of the house! It literally took longer to rig than to shoot. After hitting our 100th slate - it was a wrap on Brand New Beginnings, congrats to Matthew Fisher and Matthew Ford on producing this one. Fantastic performances from the cast and it goes on to the editor soon to start being compiled together. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................. February 2nd and 3rd - Saw Second Chances come to life. Second Chances - is from a script by Matthew Fisher, which is about a character called, John - who finds himself trying to gain a second chance at life! Teddy Smith the Director on this Tale has formed a great cast who have worked a lot together before, most notably on our web series Whovians. Ben Wilson, John Hutch and Lisa Grace make up this fantastic cast. Saturday Feb 2nd we all arrived at Milk & Sugar Cardiff, which was used as our location - we started at 4pm, rigged, actors rehearsed and Teddy Smith worked with cast and crew. Filming began at around 5pm, filming the core of the film between characters played by Ben and John. Filming wrapped at around 9:30pm - with a tired cast and crew - but fantastic performances captured and a happy Director. Sunday 3rd we all meet down Cardiff Bay for a day on location. Filming a few scenes that take place at a bus stop. Ben and John are joined by Lisa Grace, Also the Crew is joined by Richard Williams and Andrew White. The morning went by very well, hardly any traffic (which is why the location was chosen), weather stayed dry and wides and various takes are captured. After a lunch break, which cast and crew are treated to a 5 star meal! We get back to filming - unfortunately rain has come in, so we punch in and film singles/close ups. The rain passes by and in the edit you wont notice, but by now its early afternoon and Sunday drivers seem to be out in full - after asking actors to pause while cars go by, then continue scene - we manage to record everything we need. With a very Cold Cast and Crew, The film wrapped at 3:30pm and Congrats to all for a fast paced shoot. That's 3 Strange Tales in the can!!!! Production goes on a break for now, as Watchers Productions is awaiting a new toy that will improve future shoots. Stand By!!!

A day of fun and laughter with some new faces and original faces from the pilot made last year.
